The TUC has launched the day as new research shows there has been slow progress in tackling the UK's hours culture. Workers are also being encouraged to take a proper lunch break and bosses have been told to treat their staff to a meal or drink to thank them for the amount of unpaid duties they perform. The union claims workers effectively give their employers £23bn worth of free work every year. And more than , people regularly put in more than 10 hours unpaid overtime a week meaning their yearly salary only starts being paid from today. TUC General Secretary Barber said: "Work Your Proper Hours Day is both a bit of fun and a to ask some serious questions about work/life balance in the UK." He added: "Of course we are not ing for Britain to become a nation of clock-watchers. Most staff are happy to put in some extra time when there's an emergency or extra pressure of work, but it should not be taken for granted week in, week out." Investors in People warned employers not to confuse hours worked with productivity, and to support employees more effectively. Acting chief executive Jones said: "In jobs, there are times when it is necessary for people to work later than normal in order to meet that pressing deadline. "However, when these hours become the norm, there is clearly a wider issue which managers cannot afford to ignore."
